The more things change the more they stay the same...

Habari asubuhi?

So guess where I am right now? I am sitting in an internet cafe in the humble little neighbourhood of Sekei. Thats right... Sekei! The lady who owns it told me it opened only 2 weeks ago. Good timing for me. It is like 2 minutes from my home, and I never thought I would see the day I could check my email in Sekei! This breaking news means that on match day I may actually be able to check the carms website on the actual day! It closes at 9:00pm Tanzania time which means 1:00pm Canada time, so there is a good chance it will be posted before closing!

Now back to the theme of this email: Changes. The following is a list of the new additions/changes since last I was here:

1) A new traffic light installed at the corner of Nairobi-Moshi Road and Sanawari. This means safe street crossing when I go to work... much appreciated. It is also the second traffic like in Arusha.
2)ViaVia (my favourite Arusha sanctuary- a restaurant behind a museum)- they installed glass windows which means the rain doesn't come in (very helpful for the terrential downpour today) anymore. They now have wireless internet... which I won't be taking advantage of but is a welcome addition!
3) Mama's house- It was recently painted a nice shade of yellowy orange. The couches are no longer wood but now there is 2 couches, 1 loveseat, 2 big arm chairs that are super comfy and all match. There is now tile halfway up the wall in the shower room, but not yet in the toilet room. The gate has moved over to the right side. The back shed has been torn down and a guesthouse built with two rooms Mama can rent out to people to make some extra money... and they have their own outdoor toilet and sink.

So getting back to ViaVia. It used to be my favourite place to get chai masala. It is not as good as I remember it. They also changed how they serve their pesto pasta, and not for the better. The service is still the same.... you can never find your waitress!

I purchased my plane ticket to Mwanza today. I went in yesterday only to find out they don't take credit card! When I said I would come back they told me to go pick up my ticket... which as you can imagine puzzled me as I had not paid for it. Apparently you do not need to pay for your tickey when you first get it, but rather you can return anytime before your flight!

I met Dr. Msuya for the first time today. The day started with a c-section, which was a bit different because the father was allowed to watch the entire surgery. He was very excited as he missed the birth of his first child and was majorly picture happy... taking pictures of the spinal, the prep, and whole surgery and finally a legit picture of the baby before his memory card was full!

They do things the same here as in India- the same flip flops in the OR, scrubbing in with soap, green over-sized scrubs, etc.

Today in clinic we saw a wide range of cases. Dr. Msuya, to sum him up, is a family MD, general internist, cardiologist, ob-gyn, and a general surgeon all wrapped into one. He believes there is no reason an ob-gyn shouldn't be able to perform an appendectomy, or resect necrotic bowel when they are in there as all ob-gyns should know abodominal anatomy.

We had an excellent mango-passion fruit drink as a snack that the nurse brought in that was very cold and welcomed. We know how I love mango and passion fruit!

I then went to the massai market to pick up a couple things. I have never been completely by myself, but managed to hold my own being harrassed from all angles and am still the champ of bargaining. I even met one women who had some things I really liked who's mother had a hysterectomy for fibroids done by Dr. Msuya, so she gave me a good price.

Until next time...
